Son's Silence, Father's Stillness
Sheep (lambs) have poor eyesight and they can barely see even the objets that are less than 9 ft away. They can't see a wolf until it breathes down their neck. They often get lost. They are vulnerable, not vicious. They are quiet when they are being sheared. In fact, shearing makes them more comfortable so they don't mind it. They are silent when they are led to the slaughter because they don¡¯t know what¡¯s going on. Jesus is like a lamb. He was quiet - no excuses or explanations - when ridiculed and humiliated. He, like a lamb, was quiet when taken to the cross.
Unlike lambs, however, Jesus was fully aware of his path. Therefore He could open His mouth to defend. But He opened not His mouth. When crucified, He said "forgive them." After an utter silence, the Son simply asked, "Why have you forsaken me?" Father, however, remained still. Through the Son's silence and through the Father's stillness, peace was brought to us, healing is given, and redemption is granted to us all.
