"Thank you for YOU"
Psalm 118 is a poem written about thanksgiving. Allowing the Israelites to cross the Red Sea and providing an abundance of water from a rock may have been reasons for thanksgiving to God but the psalmist specifically gives thanks "for He is good" and states God's character is the reason. God's goodness does not mean that He is soft-tempered and kind, but that there is not a single bit of falsehood in Him. Although we as humans are evil, full of lies, and conditional in our love (being good to somebody one moment, then being distant and cold the next), God was, is, and will be always the same. Therefore, God's character and love is unchanging and endures forever.
The people who are invited to give thanks are the Israelites (v.2), the house of Israel (v.3), and those who fear the Lord (v.4). The thing that these three groups have in common is that they were all chosen by God. God reveals His goodness to His chosen people, and that is a reason for thanksgiving. The fact that we were chosen as one of God's own and that God's character and heart towards His people does not change but are eternally good¡¦these two facts are more than enough reason to give thanks to God. It is not a prayer of "God, thank you for your¡¦" but rather "God, Thank you for YOU".
